Brooks Memorial Hospital recently purchased 11 new, state-of-the-art Gambro dialysis machines to better serve area residents in need of treatment. The Community Action Team at NRG’s Dunkirk electric generating steam station helped with financial support for the equipment upgrades.
“The number of patients we serve continues to rise due to earlier diagnosis of kidney disease and the increasing longevity of the general population,” said hospital president Richard Ketcham. “We have replaced all the older machines at a total cost of $150,000 and have requested state approval to add four additional stations to provide even better treatment to ever more people.” “We greatly appreciate the support provided by NRG Dunkirk Power in helping with this important improvement at the hospital.” he added.
NRG Dunkirk Power’s Community Action Team provided $5,000 toward the purchase of the new machines. “Team members felt very strongly that we should help Brooks Hospital with this project,” commented Bart Sobczyk, power plant Community Action Team Chairman. “We recently had a fellow employee loose his battle with kidney disease, this money will strengthen the program and benefit local residents as well as visitors to our area.” Ketcham noted yearly treatments had risen from 6,453 in 2002 to 8,889 by 2006 and that Brooks was seeing a steady increase in the number of summer vacationers in need of dialysis. “Retirees who go to warmer climates for the winter and return here in the summer and many others who just come to our area to visit have treatment needs. We want to be able to serve all of them well,” he said. “NRG’s support will help us do that.”
