Obstetrics / Maternity Services

The Brooks Memorial Hospital OB Department strives to provide a safe and secure environment for each and every baby delivered here. During their stay in Obstetrics, new moms receive important information and education about their new baby. Our OB staff provides education on infant care, breastfeeding, and any additional topics that the moms require. Because it is very important that moms and babies receive as much rest as possible, we suggest that visits not be excessive and are limited to immediate family.

Brooks Obstetrics Unit Installs New Monitoring System

Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk NY recently installed a new high-tech central monitoring system in their Obstetrics Unit. The Avalon CTS Cordless Fetal Transducer System is now in use at Brooks, allowing expectant mothers to be untethered from the fetal monitors. Wearing the lightweight, cordless transducers, mothers-to-be can move about with freedom and comfort, and even bathe while being continuously monitored. The Avalon system measures external fetal heart rate and movement, uterine activity and maternal ECG. The system uses radio frequency technology to transmit information to a base station, Philips fetal monitors, and the OB TraceVue information management system.

The new OB TraceVue system is a patient-focused obstetrical information system that provides a complete clinical record of care for the mother and newborn. It allows patient surveillance, alerting, documentation, and archiving functionality to ensure comprehensive coverage across the obstetrical care continuum. Maternal care can also be tracked across multiple pregnancies to provide a comprehensive obstetrical record. Brooks Obstetrics staff and physicians can access the TraceVue data wherever it is needed; at the patient bedside and delivery room, in the nursing stations, and in the physician’s home or office. Easy access to well-organized information improves efficiency, allowing staff to focus more attention on patients and achieve the best quality of care.

Obstetrics Clinical Nurse Manager Roselle Atzrott and her staff recently completed training on the new system, and are very excited about the new technology in the department. “This is a substantial commitment to our community and a big move forward for our Maternity Department.” Said Roselle. “Our staff already loves it, and I am sure that our patients will too.”
