CAT Scans (Computerized Axial Tomography)

CAT Scans

Procedure

Although the equipment may look intimidating, you need not be frightened. A technologist will help you lie comfortably on the special X-ray table. You'll be asked to remove your glasses and any metal objects, and depending on the part of the body to be scanned, a restraining device may be used to help insure that you don't move. This will not cause any discomfort.

The table will then slowly enter the scanner opening as you relax and hold very still. Nothing will touch you. The actual scanning procedure will be performed from an adjacent room and monitored by the technologist through a large window. The total procedure lasts only between 5 to 15 minutes.

Depending on the part to be scanned, it may be necessary to administer a contrast material. This is determined on an individual basis, and if required, is usually injected into a vein in your arm from a syringe or gradually from an intravenous bottle. As the contrast material enters your blood stream, you may feel warm or notice a metallic taste in your mouth or throat. This is a normal reaction and lasts only a few minutes.

Preparation

It is essential that you make an appointment because procedures vary depending on the parts of the body to be scanned:

• Brain/Head - You must not eat anything 4 hours prior to your appointment.

• Abdomen and Pelvis - You'll be required to drink a contrast dye 12 hours before your scan which the hospital will make available for you to pick up and ingest. Immediately preceding your scan, you will be given the final dosage to swallow. You will find the most helpful clothing will be attire without snaps, buttons and belts. Exercise clothing or pull-on sportswear is ideal.

• Results - Your CAT Scan will be interpreted by a radiologist (who is a physician specializing in the field of X-Ray.) If more Images are required, they will be taken at this time. But in most cases, you may go home. The radiologist will then consult with your physician regarding your results, usually the next day, and your doctor will discuss the diagnose and recommendations with you.
