How do I become a Brooks Memorial Hospital Volunteer?

Hospitals have the luxury of being the first place that people think about when they think about volunteering, and hospitals such as Brooks utilize volunteers in many areas. We are grateful to the dedicated community members who donate their time to help out.

Becoming a volunteer in a hospital takes a bit more time, paperwork and training than in non-hospital organizations. Hospitals must ensure that every hospital representative is properly trained, in good health, and compliant with safety and confidentiality requirements. A lot of time and effort is put into screening, and educating each volunteer at Brooks.

  • Volunteer Application – must be completed and submitted along with the appropriate health requirements before a potential volunteer is interviewed.

  • Health Assessment – must be completed, signed, and dated at the time of application and annually thereafter by all volunteers. A physical examination is not required, but for both volunteer and patient safety, we must be aware of any potential health problems or conditions.

  • Complete Shot History – for all volunteers born after 1957, a complete shot history must be submitted along with the volunteer application. It is imperative that all employees and volunteers are up-to-date with their immunizations including MMR, Polio, Rubella, Rubeola, Chicken Pox, etc. This documentation is usually obtained from a school health record or personal physician. In the absence of this documentation, potential volunteers must provide the hospital with proof of immunity to these diseases. The hospital cannot pay for these titers.

  • Confidentiality Statement – Hospitals have an obligation, both legal and moral, to maintain patient confidentiality and privacy. ALL patient information is confidential and patients have the same expectation of confidentiality from volunteers as they do paid hospital employees. Individuals incapable of fully understanding confidentiality will not be placed in volunteer positions. Volunteers can be dismissed for violating patient confidentiality. Volunteers can be sued by patients for violating patient confidentiality. The volunteer orientation includes training and information about these important topics, and volunteers must sign confidentiality statements.

  • Hospital Policies – Everyone within the hospital must abide by the same dress code, harassment, smoking, confidentiality, and other policies. As a representative of the hospital, volunteers must present themselves to our customers (the patients) in a neat, professional and appropriate manner. The volunteer orientation includes information about these policies and repercussions for violating them.

  • PPD Testing – All volunteers and employees must be tested annually for Tuberculosis. This testing is accomplished by the PPD which is administered at the hospital and paid for by the hospital.
